Drug Testing in Weightlifting

Drug Testing in Weightlifting

This week the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) released their 2023 Anti-Doping statistics, held in conjunction with the International Testing Agency (ITA).

By the numbers:

  • 3,192 samples were collected (55.3% of those were in competition)
  • Of those 3,192 samples the ITA completed 2,522 tests
  • 1,039 athletes were tested (with an average of 3.07 tests/athlete)
  • There was a 52% / 48% split between men and women
  • Missing from among the 18 most tested countries in the world were the dominant North Korean team. Their return to the sport in late 2023 might not have offered them enough time to garner sufficient tests. It will be interesting to see where they rank in 2024.
  • 24.7% of all tests were blood tests, 75.3% were urine

And the testing continues! When we took a look at the section of the ITA’s website where they partner with the IWF we saw more bans having just been announced, three from Turkey and three from Ukraine, none of whom qualified for the Olympic Games this summer.
