- Why It Matters: Last time China, the most dominant country in the sport's modern history, hosted the Asian Weightlifting Championships in 2019, we saw 15 new world records set or broken.
The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) is set to scrub the existing weight categories next month. Jiangshan stands as the last chance for Asian weightlifters to put themselves into, or reclaim their places in, the record books.

2025 Asian Weightlifting Championships Preview
The Asian Weightlifting Championships represent the best of the best of the...you get the idea. As of May, half of all Senior Men's world records belong to Asian weightlifters.
Among the women, three standards remain unclaimed in the 87-kilogram category, and only one lift, the 71-kilogram snatch record, belongs to an athlete from outside Asia.
Here are just a few of the many great athletes we're excited to see (and expect big things from) in Jiangshan:
- Rahmat Erwin Abdullah (73, INA): After losing his grip on a Paris ticket (and, likely, a gold medal), Abdullah is back in action in the 73s for the first time in a year.
- Kuo Hsing-Chun (59, TPE): Ostrowicz considers Kuo "a legend in the sport," and he's right. The five-time Asian Champion will face stiff competition en route to her sixth regional title after over a decade competing at the top of one of the sport's most competitive classes.
- Ayat Sharifi Kelarijani (+109, IRI): Expect this Kelarijani to enter the race for "the next Lasha Talakhadze" in a big way. He's been off IWF stages since the World Cup last year, where he totaled 447 kilograms.
- Song Kuk-Hyang (71, PRK): Remember that singular non-Asian world record? Song has tried several times to scrub Angie Dajomes' 121-kilogram snatch from the books. This is her last chance to consolidate the women's weightlifting record books.
- Liu Huanhua & Artyom Antropov (102KG, CHN & KAZ): It's clash of the titans for two of the best heavyweights in the world. Huanhua is coming off his illustrious 2024 Olympic run, while Antropov is top dog in the yard after dominating the World Championships last December.
- Rizki Juniansyah (81KG): We've heard Juniansyah's packed on a good bit of muscle while moving up to a heavier class. Last year, he dashed his teammate's Olympic dreams in one swift stroke — will Rahmat's 209-kilogram clean & jerk record fall to pieces as well?
- Chen Guan-Ling (55, TPE): Recently, Chen had an uncharacteristically bad day at the Youth & Junior World Weightlifting Championships, finishing off the podium and going two-for-six. She'll be looking for a course correction in Jiangshan, but she'll have to beat two Chinese athletes to win it all.
